Bernard Hopkins

About Bernard Hopkins

Bernard Hopkins is a professional boxer who holds many unique distinctions. Born in Philadelphia on January 15, 1965, Hopkins became a professional boxer after being released from prison in 1988. He began his career as a light heavyweight, but soon became a middleweight. On April 29, 1995, Hopkins won the IBF world middleweight championship in a seventh-round TKO victory against Segundo Mercado. This would ultimately lead to a historic feat, as he held the middleweight belt for ten years and had a record 20 title defenses. Hopkins also became the first fighter to unify the titles of all four major sanctioning bodies when he defeated Oscar De La Hoya in 2004. In addition, he was the oldest boxer to ever hold the middleweight championship. On April 3, 2010, Hopkins finally avenged his 1993 loss to Roy Jones, Jr. in a rematch of his first world title shot.
