Babe Ruth

About Babe Ruth

Arguably the greatest sports figure of all time, Babe Ruth will forever be remembered as the first major star athlete and as one of the best players, if not the best player, in baseball history. Born in 1895 as George Herman, Ruth acquired the nickname “Babe” while in the minor leagues, and the name stuck for the rest of his career (and legacy thereafter). In 1914, Ruth made his MLB debut playing for the Boston Red Sox. He went on to also play for the New York Yankees and the Boston Braves before retiring in 1935. During his legendary playing career, Ruth won seven World Series, including four with the Yankees. Known as one of the greatest homerun hitters of all time, Ruth was the first player ever to hit 60 homeruns in a season. He also led the league in season homers 12 times. Perhaps as impressively, Ruth led the league in slugging percentage 13 times, and his career slugging percentage is still the best of all time. In 1936, Ruth was one of the first five players to be elected into the National Baseball Hall of Fame. In 1999, he was named to the MLB All-Century Team. Babe Ruth passed away on August 16, 1948 due to pneumonia.
